The recycling scheme runs in Bracknell, Wokingham and Reading and is to assist disabled and disadvantaged people into work through recycling.
The scheme started in Bracknell as an initiative to both help reduce landfill, recycle aluminium and gave the opportunity to individuals with a learning disability to gain work experience by getting involved in a worthwhile community project.
The project involves travelling to various sites that include supermarkets which are existing recycling points and manage the foil banks. This entails emptying the foil banks, sorting and taking the sorted aluminium to a processing plant where the majority of it is made into car parts.
The project has been running successfully for a number of years and has recently expanded the number of banks we manage. Our volunteers have learning disabilities and mental health issues and it gives them work experience in various skills which can be transferred to various other areas of the workforce. The real aim is for individuals to move on from here to other areas of paid work, however people have the choice to remain as volunteers for as long as they wish.
